I found a photograph of a Jicarilla Apache woman from the late 1800s. To me, she seemed weathered, yet majestically regal.
I decided to sculpt a likeness of the Apache woman which, to me, represented a woman's ability to overcome trials and hardship. I wanted the woman to look like she was overworked and weather beaten. In my mind, she does what it takes to care for her family day after day. She, through sacrifice, keeps others going and alive. Her accomplishments go largely unrecognized until later on in life, when her beat-up, sun-scorched, wrinkled, aching body is seen by her children and grandchildren as a beautiful, yet strong symbol of all her "Quiet Victories."
